About Trout Hotel

The Hotel

Proud to have been classified 4 star by the AA and Visit Britain in 2009, we aim to provide quality accommodation, professional, friendly service and most of all excellent value for our guests.  As a team we will always endeavour to go that little bit further to provide our guests with an enjoyable and memorable stay.

The hotel is steeped in history and rich in personality. It accommodates forty-nine luxuriously appointed rooms, five exceptional dining experiences, well appointed meeting rooms and a stunning location.

Nestled in the quaint market town of Cockermouth, we’re just a stone’s throw away from the spectacular scenery of the English Lake District, and just a short walk from the town’s castle, its ancient market place, the famous Jennings Brewery and some rather interesting, historical buildings.

The History of the Trout.

Originally built in the 17th century as a private residence, this historic building first opened its doors as a hotel in 1934. Since then, the original structure has been extended, and the old stables, tastefully converted.

Everywhere you look, the new harmonizes with the
old seamlessly.

The building’s unique character has been retained. The original stone walls, exposed beams and reconditioned marble fireplaces remind us of its heritage. Beautifully restored cornicing and ceiling roses, period stained glass windows, and a carefully preserved oak staircase, add a touch of elegance. The building’s charm will be sure to capture your imagination.

The Team at the Trout.

Our friendly, experienced team, many of whom have been with us for a long time, help make the atmosphere relaxed, yet professional. Everything we do is with your well-being in mind. As an independent hotel all decisions are made in house, between ourselves, for the benefit of our guests. So, if there’s anything you’d like, just ask.

We care enormously about the service we offer.

We’re fastidious about everything being just so. But we’re equally passionate about the countryside around us. Local values are close to our hearts. One of which is promoting home grown and locally sourced produce. By doing so not only can we serve you the very best ingredients, but it also means we’re supporting the local economy whilst helping reduce food miles and the burden on our roads in the process.
